Class 4: Elfay’s Notes: Preparation for class

Second hour will move to Rob Barber’s SIM in Second Life (make sure you have found him already have the SLURL for that SIM ahead of class time)

He (and I) will have invited our regular friends/guests from both our shows to participate in this portion of the class. Rob will be talking about himself, his art and his work hopefully both in and out of SL). You can find his work here: http://www.robsteenhorst.nl/

Interact with us and our guests throughout the hour. – That means; I expect you can already teleport, use basic animations, talk in chat, and most importantly-have your audio working to enable you to hear live streaming (and in-house voice) before this class starts

There will be time for Q & A in chat before class ends. It’s social. loose. interactive and (supposed) to be fun! Prepare ahead of time so you can enjoy it and participate fully!

Group Project Work: ‘Ties that bind 2.0’

In keeping with  our time honored tradition, this year the students have been set a collaborative project to work on a joint presentation to be delivered in Second Life at the end of module. The presentation should use various media forms and the use of props and all is encouraged… (creativity welcomed).

The brief is to interpret the theme ‘Ties that bind 2.0’ in terms of the module objectives, bearing in mind that the module is based on the identification of the self online, forming relationships and becoming part of communities.

Discussions will be ongoing, culminating in the final presentation. Each presentation should last between five and ten minutes.

Groups

  1. Dudley, Thomas, Sofia and Box
  2. Fenix, Kautostar and autocat
  3. Inish, Seranox, B.ro, and Ace.

Students will also be using various means to publicize their event and engage with the communities they identify with and engage with. They will be expected to reflect on the experience of collaborating online, working online and highligh their main contributions in their blogs.

Very kindly provided by Elfay Pinkdot is a suggested List of Resources for recording and editing the essential audio for the story telling project:

(Note; All of the following are free, available online for downloading and can be used by each member of the group. You need highspeed broadband for skype, secondlife and streaming audio.

1. Skype with Pamela to record audio recording plugin http://www.skype.com/intl/en/welcomeback/ and http://www.pamela.biz/en/

2. Audicity for editing http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

3. Soundcloud to share the file http://soundcloud.com/  or simply send the file to each group member via skype

Also note; ONE person in the group will have to be the designated audio engineer in order to stream your final, edited audio file into the SIM in Second Life on the evening of your event.

First class for 2010 Semester 2

There will be an introductory class on Tuesday 9 February 201o at 11.45 am to 12.30 pm in Room 220 in Mountjoy Square.

Following that all classes will be on Wednesday nights from 8.00 to 9.30 pm. We will meet in Second Life so you will need to have your computer set-up organised. Please read carefully the instruction on the pages to the right of this text: 8. Getting into Second Life; and 9. Activating voice in SL.

Virtual intimacy?

Stefana Broadbent is a cognitive scientist who has spent decades observing people as they use technology. In this TED Talks presentation she discusses how intimate relationships are nurtured with technologies such as the mobile phone, IM etc.

Social sites have real bite. An article from The Irish Times outlining the use of social networking sites such as facebook and YouTube to bring recalcitrant service providers to book.

Putting business on the social media map. Another article from The Irish Times about Mark Swaine, a DIT graduate and award-winning founder of interactive design agency Squire.
