Class 5: Content creation

March 14, 2014

Ham Rambler 1_001CLASS SUMMARY:

Ham Rambler (above) and Sitearm Madonna spoke on the development of content in the online environment. Sitearm covered the following points:

  • Content Creation – what constitutes content, how is it generated?
  • Value – does your content have any value?
  • Sharing your content – making it available, generating an income.
  • Use and protection of online content – copyright and Intellectual Property (IP) issues.
  • Consider your content for the end project.

Ham talked about the use of corporate trademarks in Second Life and the reaction of global brands to seeing themselves appear in the virtual world. The various methodologies for protecting content including copyright, trademark registration and patents were discussed. A question about the copyright of book titles focussed on what might not be protected (see You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice…) The development of digital and online content has led to a new approach to sharing under the Creative Commons system.  Finally, we referred to Bruns’ Consumer – Prosumer – Produser proposition brought about by the web (see last weeks list of activities).

Sitearm Madonna’s slides are available here:

2. Read The Laws of Virtual Worlds (accessed on 03/14/14) from the California Law Review 2003 this is an excellent, if highly specialised, review of the legal position of avatars in virtual worlds.

Class 2: Project teams

February 21, 2014

CLASS SUMMARY:

The class started with each student presenting an ‘elevator pitch’ that essentially consisted of a brief introduction to themselves, their area of study, and particular interest in this module.

This was followed by a presentation on team working skills by guest tutor and module graduate Sitearm Madonna.  The slides for this presentation can be viewed here: http://www.slideshare.net/sitearm/virtual-collaboration-tips-and-tools

The participants were then divided into three groups and the module project was introduced and discussed. Full details and the project specifications are given on page 6 Module Assessment. The theme for the project is: ‘Reality’. There is a growing tension between what is considered reality by different generations and groups in society. We know it is possible to live predominantly in a virtual medium and this trend is likely to continue and be more easily afforded with ongoing technological advances. Each participant is asked to explore what makes up reality to themselves and, in particular, how any virtual lives and online engagements are integrated into their daily reality.

The three groups decamped across Akron Island to allow the members to get to know each other, discuss how they might proceed as a group, arrange communication channels and meeting times.

The teams are:

  1. ania, Daniel, Sam, Michael, Knitsy, and Mitch Madness
  2. Seranox1, Irale, Leela, Mandana, and Twinkle Toes
  3. Q, Benisgreat, Knightt, Lewis, Andrew, and Garrett

Please note: There are at least two other Akron students who cannot make it to our Thursday meetings. They are not on a team yet, but if you can coordinate other times to meet with them and other ways to communicate, please recruit them to your team.  They are: Lindsay and SteveSykes (you can search for them and find them in SL).

ACTIVITIES FOR NEXT CLASS:

  1. Explore: Get to know your group members and explore SL with your group. You are to visit at least 3 locations that are new to you. Find them in search, or ask other residents for recommendations or select them at random.
  2. Discuss: ideas for your project with your group how you are going to develop the project.
  3. Write: the second post on your blog reviewing the locations you visited. Explain how and why you chose them and what relevance they might have for your group.
  4. Read: Personal Branding Basics for 2011 (accessed on 02/21/14) by Chris Brogan, expert in online community, social media, and related technologies.

There is plenty of interesting writing about Second Life and virtual worlds across the web in online publications such as Virtual Worlds Magazine. Seek them out and try to discover others for yourself.

Virtual Anthropology and the Prometheus Myth (accessed on 02/21/14) by Salahzar Stenvaag in Virtual Worlds Magazine

Class 6: Content creation, part two

March 13, 2013

CLASS SUMMARY:

Guest Lecturers Sitearm Madonna and Elfay Pinkdot delivered this week’s class at the Dublin Conference Area.

The aim of this class was to get participants thinking about and using the tools needed for creating the final presentation and what the implications of making your own or using existing ones might be.

Madonna and Pinkdot covered a list of collaborative tools used for making and uploading: videos, audio tracks, images etc, with emphasis on how these funnel into a typical IOLE Formal Presentation including whether to do it inworld or via YouTube.

This list of tutorials to watch BEFORE class was circulated in advance; to save time and give you a chance to absorb the technical aspects of these tools.  *NOTE: some of these tutorials refer to SL viewers that you may not be using, you may need to look on your own viewer to find where the buttons are located – but they will be there!

Sorry my own portal site is being updated and not useful to you right now.

Second hour will move to Rob Barber’s SIM in Second Life (make sure you have found him already have the SLURL for that SIM ahead of class time)

He (and I) will have invited our regular friends/guests from both our shows to participate in this portion of the class. Rob will be talking about himself, his art and his work hopefully both in and out of SL). You can find his work here: http://www.robsteenhorst.nl/

Interact with us and our guests throughout the hour. – That means; I expect you can already teleport, use basic animations, talk in chat, and most importantly-have your audio working to enable you to hear live streaming (and in-house voice) before this class starts

There will be time for Q & A in chat before class ends. It’s social. loose. interactive and (supposed) to be fun! Prepare ahead of time so you can enjoy it and participate fully!

“The Frequent Asides”;
There are also my own ”private” networking pages on Flickr, Tumblr, Linkedin, Artbistro, Google and Mandys as well as my own portal site. But they can all be found by starting at one or more of the above. So nothing is private. So in other words…nothing is private.”

Group Project Work: ‘Ties that bind 2.0’

October 18, 2012

In keeping with  our time honored tradition, this year the students have been set a collaborative project to work on a joint presentation to be delivered in Second Life at the end of module. The presentation should use various media forms and the use of props and all is encouraged… (creativity welcomed).

The brief is to interpret the theme ‘Ties that bind 2.0’ in terms of the module objectives, bearing in mind that the module is based on the identification of the self online, forming relationships and becoming part of communities.

Discussions will be ongoing, culminating in the final presentation. Each presentation should last between five and ten minutes.

Groups

  1. Dudley, Thomas, Sofia and Box
  2. Fenix, Kautostar and autocat
  3. Inish, Seranox, B.ro, and Ace.

Students will also be using various means to publicize their event and engage with the communities they identify with and engage with. They will be expected to reflect on the experience of collaborating online, working online and highligh their main contributions in their blogs.

For more details about the assessment of this module see page 6 (Module Assessment) in the right hand column of this blog.

Stefana Broadbent is a cognitive scientist who has spent decades observing people as they use technology. In this TED Talks presentation she discusses how intimate relationships are nurtured with technologies such as the mobile phone, IM etc.

Social sites have real bite. An article from The Irish Times outlining the use of social networking sites such as facebook and YouTube to bring recalcitrant service providers to book.

Putting business on the social media map. Another article from The Irish Times about Mark Swaine, a DIT graduate and award-winning founder of interactive design agency Squire.
